Athletics training takes place every Thursday from 2:40-3:40 in the Sports Hall. It is open to children from 3rd to 6th class. Training costs €1 per child which is used to purchase new equipment for the school.

The children train in a number of areas of athletics – jumps, throws, sprints, relays, hurdles and cross country. The school participate in two large competitions each year.

The South Dublin County Council Cross Country Finals, which take place in Jobstown Park with the final in Corkagh Park. The events are about collecting points for your school- so the top 10 children in each race have their points recorded. All the children are encouraged to complete their race at a pace that suits them and are commended for achieving these long distances. The children run the following distances:

  • 3rd class run 300m
  • 4th class run 400m
  • 5th class run 500m
  • 6th class run 600m

There is one event per month in February, March, April and the final takes place in May.

The second competition that we compete in is the Cumann na mBunscol Athletics in Santry Stadium. Here the children compete in a variety of events – Long Jump, High Jump, Shot Putt, Hurdles, 600m, Sprints and Relays. There is always great excitement in the stadium with each school beginning the day with a lap of the track, parading their athletes. It is a wonderful day for the children to experience such a large event. We have been successful in previous years bringing medals back to St Marys and hope to continue to do so.

To participate in Athletics each child must return this Screening Form completed.
