Last week was Green Schools Week 2026 in St. Mary’s National School. Students took part in a wide variety of activities, with each day having a specific focus. On Tuesday, the students focus was on Cycling to School. Students from Junior Infants to 2nd Class enjoyed taking part in Art activities which included designing your own Cycle to School mask. Senior students, from 3rd to 6th Class, designed their own helmet designs. On Wednesday, Scooting to School was the focus of activities, with students across the school learning about scooter safety and how to wear our helmets properly.
Becoming Environmental Inventors and thinking of new forms of sustainable transport was the key focus on Thursday, while Friday’s focus centred on Walking to School and all of the benefits that come with walking to school each day.
Green Schools week finished with each class planting Lavender, Basil and Mint in compostable pots in their classroom. These flowers and herbs will then be transferred outside once the weather becomes much drier and warmer.
Here are some images of the students having great fun taking part in the activities;
Finally, the Green School Committee would like to thank all members of our school community who took part and helped make the week a great success!
