The Next Great Athletes

The boys and girls in St Mary’s NS have been practicing for their upcoming competitions. Almost 100 children made the trek to Rathcoole Park on Friday to practice. We also had a great day out in Donore Harriers Athletics Club, where we had trials for our Santry teams.

50 children, from 3rd-6th class, took part in a cross-country competition in Tallaght in February. They all did really well and we notched up a lot of team points. The next cross country competition is in March and there will be a final one in April. Here’s hoping we do just as well on those dates!

When all of the cross-country racing is done and dusted we will start concentrating on practicing for the track and field competitions in Santry, which is happening at the end of May. Local man, Michael Ryan, is working closely with us and is running the Berlin Half Marathon this month to try to raise funds for a new athletics club in the area. He is hoping to raise enough to buy a kit for us…so we should be looking extra well for the Santry competitions this year!!! We’ve done very well in the last few years. Let’s hope we can continue to improve and take a few medals back to Saggart this year!

2nd, 3rd and 4th Classes are really lucky this term. They have been having training with an athletics coach every Thursday morning. They are all enjoying it a lot.
