Sports Day 2019

This year’s Sports Day was held on Tuesday the 7th of May. Bright sunshine greeted the boys and girls of St Marys as the day kicked off with the short distance sprints for all class groups from 1st – 6th. Meanwhile the Junior and Senior Infants had a plethora of exciting stations prepared for them to test out their agility and sporting endeavor.                                                                                                                         Back on the main section of the GAA pitch the 1st – 6th class groups took part in the long-distance races which tested their stamina over a lap-and-a-half of the entire GAA grounds.

A much needed rest was had for all the participative pupils, organizing teachers and supportive spectators at little break time. From after break until two o’ clock, the whole school grounds came alive with engagingly-fun and sporting activities. These included a full range of sporting stations from the traditional basketball, hurling, gaelic football, rugby, soccer, rounders and penalty shoot-outs to the more distinctive hockey, hurdles, Tug-of-war, , gymnastics, Bench and prison ball and even Mini-sports P.E stations.

In the concluding hour of what was a truly successful sporting day, the infant classes were presented with their awards first out on a sunny infant yard before giving way to the 1st – 6th class prize presentations in the calm of the school’s hall. Here, all of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd-placed pupil athletes in all the categories of both the sprint and longer distance races were warmly congratulated by the whole school.

All in all, another hugely enjoyable day was experienced by all school members and once again a massive thanks must go to Mrs. Lannery for masterminding it all.
